Did you watch the Saskatchewan election results last night? Or perhaps you read about it in this mornings StarPhoenix? Or maybe you just heard through the grapevine, or at the water cooler at work?
Saskatchewan Party - 49 seats
New Democrats - 9 seats
Wow. That's all I can say. STRONG NDP incumbants like Andy Iwanchuk and Judy Junor lost their seats to the Sask Party. Some
I expected a loss, but nothing this catastrophic.
When I went to cast my ballot, I had to think of a few things. Firstly, Danielle Chartier, my NDP MLA, is an amazing person. She's wonderful at what she does, she works HARD for the people of Saskatoon Riversdale, and she's always there, knocking on doors, saying, "What do you like? What can I do to better serve you?"
However, when it came down to who I was going to put an 'X' beside... One thing kept going through my mind...
$2.3 BILLION in promises...
Where the FUCK is that money going to come from? Oh, raise potash royalties? Okay. That's something you CAN do. Maybe potash will leave Saskatchewan, and then what would happen? Would the NDP go back on their promises? Would taxes be raised through the roof?
I am purely, 100% a New Democrat. I believe in what they stand for (for the most part). I believe in social justice. I believe in equality for all. I belive that EVERYONE deserves an equal share. Not just the rich... Not just the natives... Not the white man, nor the poor, nor the elderly... I believe EVERYONE should be given equal share, equal responsibility, equal treatment. After all, are we not all human?
So, when it came down to it, I asked myself this: Who would benefit ALL of Saskatchewan better? I'm sorry, fellow New Democrats, I didn't believe it was us. What we were promising was something that would benefit only those low income people. Only seniors. Only natives. It wouldn't be benefiting the middle class. No one would be getting any equal treatment.
I also couldn't wrap my mind around $2.3 billion... Versus, I think, $414 million is what the Sask Party has promised... That's almost $2 billion more!!! That's a whole lotta cash to be getting out of "potash royalties".
On another note, I just wanted to add how much I respect Dwayne Lingenfelter. Last night, he was humble about his loss, and I found it extremely noble of him to step down as leader. Now, this obviously means a leadership convention is in the near future... And I hope we all choose someone who is young, up and coming, who knows his crap, and who will take our party into the future! We need someone like Jack (Rest In Peace)...
Alright, now that we are all electioned out, at least until the next civic election...
Au revoir for today!
OH! One more thing. Martensville, next time, run a better NDP candidate - someone who won't lose the seat by 5,798 votes.... That's just shameful...
