Went for my ultrasound yesterday...

Just as the title says.  Yesterday was the day for my ultrasound.  I will start off by saying that having to keep 24 oz. of water in your bladder for 1.5 hours is NOT comfortable.  To add even more discomfort, I had to walk 5 blocks with all that water in my bladder.  And what's even more disturbing is the fact that I was in mega-mega-mega pain, and shortly after she started my ultrasound, she said, "I don't say this very often, but your bladder is too full!  It's squishing your uterus!"  Well!  I guess I coulda pee'd before the pain started, hey?  LOL!  Oh well, what are you going to do right.
So, she did my ultrasound, and the ultrasound tech told me I have inflamed ovaries with small cysts on them, and most likely have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome).  She went and got the doctor and he confirmed what she had said.  He said they blood work that I had done will confirm it all.  So I have an appointment with my family doctor next Tuesday to get those results back.
To break it down, PCOS, from what I understand, is basically cysts on the ovaries.  Symptoms of PCOS include infertility, infrequent or absent mentral cycle, Hirsutism, cysts on the ovaries, acne, oily skin, or dandruff, weight gain or obesity (usually more around the waist), male pattern baldness (icky!), skin tags, pelvic pain, depression or anxiety, and sleep apnea.  I have ALL of that, save for the sleep apnea (as far as I know).  There is no cure for PCOS, however, things can be done to prevent further health deterioration, as it can cause the following:
  • More than 50% of women with PCOS will develop diabetes or pre-diabetes
  • The risk of heart attack is 4-7 times greater than a person of the same age
  • Greater risk of high blood pressure
  • High levels of bad cholesterol and low levels of good cholesterol
  • Sleep apnea
  • Endometrial cancer
The things that can be done are lifestyle modification (eating right, exercise), taking birth control (which I am going to get on right away), taking metformin, a diabetes medication, and taking anti-androgens, medication to help slow down hair loss, acne, oily skin, things like that.

So that's it.  Scary, hey?  Especially the cancer part.

Anyway, I should get to work.  My boss was in a car accident yesterday, so I have loads of work to do!  At least it will keep my mind off things.
